Peru (2018-): Cookstove Sensor
DESCRIPTION
Air pollution contributes to approximately one in six deaths globally. Many homes in rural Peru still use open-fire cookstoves inside the home. In an effort to reduce exposure to harmful emissions from these cookstoves, Peru’s National Training Service for the Construction Industry (SENCICO) measures these emissions and approves cookstoves that meet the safety specifications. Commercial sensors, while available, are expensive and, due to sensor drift, must regularly be sent back to the US for calibration. In collaboration with SENCICO, we are currently designing a low-cost (<$400) sensor system for carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter (PM) measurements. Low-cost sensor systems enables more sensors to be placed in communities for testing cookstove emissions.
IMPLEMENTATION
We have left several sensors at SENCICO during the last few years for testing. We are currently in the process of finalizing a design. The plan is to provide an open source document for other entities to replicate the design.
